Experience Life Near Spanaway Lake
Spanaway Lake is the city’s largest feature, nestled in the southern outskirts of the Tacoma-Lakewood area. It is a 20-minute drive from Tacoma and 30 minutes from Olympia.

Lake Activities for All Ages
Life nearby Spanaway Lake boasts fun for all ages! Everyone is bound to have a good time with various activities from water sports to lakeside recreation. During the spring and summer months on the lake, residents can be found lounging at the two lakeside beaches, swimming, paddle boating, boating, and fishing. No boat, no problem. Pierce county offers non-motorized boat rentals, including canoes and paddle boats. Spanaway is also home to Fantasy lights walk during the winter months, the biggest drive-through holiday display in the Northwest.
There’s fun off the water too. Spanaway Lake has a 135-acre park which is extremely popular among residents because of its many year-round activities. The park features softball fields, basketball courts, a play area, and recreation trails with gorgeous waterfront views.
Sprinker-Recreation-Center
Sprinker Recreation Center is known to locals as the year-round community recreation headquarters. Their website boasts, “Nowhere in Pierce County will you find more family activities than right here on your back doorstep,” and they aren’t kidding. Sprinker has indoor and outdoor recreation for all ages, including classes, programs, and community events.
Activities include Ice Skating, Hockey, and Ice Bumper Cars, on the NHL regulation ice surface. Sprinker has four indoor tennis courts and five racquetball courts, making playtime available no matter the weather with an additional six tennis courts and two pickleball courts outdoors. Outdoors, you’ll also find eight softball diamonds, basketball courts, Spire Rock, playground equipment, a family picnic area, and one of Western Washington’s largest outdoor skate parks.
Sprinker’s annual Classic Car & Truck Show charity event is the highlight of Pierce County car enthusiasts of all ages.
A Year-Round Fishing Destination
Spanaway Lake is open year-round and offers a good harvest opportunity for stocked rainbow trout. Locals say the best time for trout fishing is in the spring, specifically March through May, and some say they can even be found into the early summer months. Since they’re primarily hatchery trout, they tend to be easier to catch, making it a great opportunity for first-timers to try their hand. Spanaway is known as one of Western Washington’s best rock bass fishing spots. Although it’s also home to both largemouth and smallmouth bass. Fishing for largemouth and smallmouth bass and yellow perch can be good in the spring and summer months. When the weather gets cooler, fishing for black crappie usually picks up from September to November.
