Priorities for Home Buyers in 2020

In 2020, Americans have spent more time in their homes than ever before (due to a global pandemic), and have begun to reevaluate their relationship with their current living spaces. Because of this, house design trends are changing. Here are the top 4 priorities for home buyers in 2020.

Priorities for Home Buyers in 2020

Working From Home

One of the highest priorities for home buyers in 2020 is a workspace within the home. As more and more corporations are shifting to a partial work from home schedule, it’s important that home buyers have a designated space in their home to concentrate without distraction. Thanks to video platforms, there is now a desire for office spaces to look professional and clean on camera. Additionally, with children, it’s best if the office space has a door so little faces don’t make appearances on conference calls.

Multipurpose Spaces

With recreational centers being closed for a majority of the year (gyms, playgrounds, art studios, etc.), home buyers are in search of homes with multipurpose spaces to accommodate their family’s recreational needs. Having a den downstairs is valuable as the room can serve as a playroom during the mornings, an office when needed, and a sitting room when guests come over.

Backyard Spaces

As travel has decreased in 2020, home buyers are looking for useable back yards (or front yards) to spend time unwinding outside. Areas that have existing covered patios or spaces where the home buyer can build a patio are ideal. Additionally, with kids it’s important to have enough space in the backyard for kid toys as well as any grass needed for pets to roam around. With the beauty of the PNW, backyard spaces is one of the highest priorities for home buyers in 2020.

Cozy and Useful Kitchen

Since restaurants were closed for multiple months, home buyers are reprioritizing the need for a cozy and useful kitchen. Home buyers are cooking more meals at home which means they need a functional kitchen that they enjoy spending time in. This kitchen space should have enough cabinet/pantry storage, and well-running appliances. Additionally, since home buyers are spending more time in the kitchen, they want the cabinets, hardware, lighting fixtures, counters, and appliances to be stylish as they will be spending a lot of time in there.
